Rate of change refers to the speed in
which something changes relative to something else. In the case of
this indicator it can be used to find abnormal change relative to
its recent history.
ROC can be used to isolate displacement
which in turn can signal a breakout scenario. A short term ROC is
usually used to identify these breakout
opportunities.
ROC can also
be used to counter trend trade. A longer term ROC identifies
displacement which signals an over bought/sold position and an
abnormal movement away from its mean. This means it has the
probability of reverting back or
correcting.
